This course has been designed for the period following resuscitation of the newborn. The theoretical and practical components focus on the post-resuscitation care of sick neonates including physical assessment, problem recognition, thermoregulation, blood sugar monitoring and stabilising the infant once admitted in the NICU.
  • Post-resuscitation stabilisation of the newborn

  • Practical session – application of nasal CPAP

On completion of the course, you should be able to:

  • Initiation and commencement of appropriate IV therapy including fluid rates, glucose monitoring and emergency treatment of hypoglycaemia
  • Discuss mechanisms of heat loss in the neonate during the resuscitation and post resuscitation period
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of respiratory distress, indications for intubation, assisting with intubation and securing the endotracheal tube
  • Demonstrate proper utilisation of CPAP device, including: correct mask size and positioning, monitoring placement of the face mask for a proper fit and monitoring the patient’s response and tolerance to the CPAP
